War is coming, darker and more terrible than any that have come before.
The Hegemony is coming to impose its brutal system of genetic supremacy on the Confederation and the other nations on the Rim, to make its elite Masters the unchallenged rulers of all human habitation in the galaxy.
The White Fleet had been an expression of optimism, a grand expedition to explore the vast reaches of the long-dead empire. Tasked to uncover the secrets of the devastating Cataclysm and to seek and recover the advanced ancient technology that humanity had once possessed, it found something else instead.
A new enemy. A vast domain, one with advanced technology, massive fleets, and a genetically-ordered society and hierarchy it intends to impose on all humanity everywhere. The Hegemony is like nothing Tyler Barron and his comrades have ever encountered…but the veteran admiral must find a way to fight the far superior enemy, to rally the Confederation’s forces, and those of the other Rim nations, for what may well be the final war.
Barron understands his task is herculean, but what he doesn’t know is that the Confederation, far from being ready to face a new enemy, is embroiled in a widening scandal, one threatening to devolve into outright civil war, as the fleets and troops needed to face the enemy square off against each other.
Barron and his people will do all they can to prevent the Confederation from slipping into oblivion, and to prepare it to face the new enemy that is coming. They have placed themselves in the breach before, saved the Confederation from disaster more than once, but this will be their greatest test, a struggle like none of them have ever experienced.
This time the goal is not victory. It is survival.
This is book 8, not 5.
So it is! Thanks for the correction.
Great job. ,Jay! Almost read the whole book without putting it down! When will “Invasion” come out? Can hardly wait !
Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you liked the book. Hopefully, I’ll have Invasion out in mid-September.
Tnx for that. Cannot wait for Invasion to be released!!! Love this series and hope you will keep it going for a while longer with the same high quality!!!
Thanks! I do plan to keep it going for a good bit longer. I’ve got a few ideas left.
Just finished last night an excellent read. Getting really curious what will happen next.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. I think you’ll really like book nine, Invasion. Hoping to get it out in September.
Where do you pick your names from? My last name is Eaton, and a good friend is named Covington. Not that I mind – it’s kind of cool knowing my descendants will be exceptional.
Arthur…I generally pull them out of thin air. That’s quite the coincidence. – Jay
I just finished reading this book. It was great!! I see from comments that you expect to release the next one in September. I’m looking forward to that. Wish it was sooner.
Keith – I’m glad you enjoyed Black Dawn. Yes, the next book, Invasion, will be out September 12. I wish it was sooner, too, but that’s just about as quickly as I can get them done! – Jay
Just finished reading! It just keeps getting better and better! I am so glad that you are such speedy writer and the next one will be out in September… can you send some of that magic over to George Martin? I think the whole world is dying to know what happens next in GOT..
How many more books can we hope for in this series? I hate having to start a new series and leave my beloved characters behind…. I’m sure you could just keep going forever! Lol
Amanda, thanks so much. I can tell you I do plan to keep the series going for a while, at least to twelve books, and possibly to 15 or more. I won’t drag it out past the story I have to tell. But, I had a new storyline starting with book 7, and I’ve got one more in mind when the time comes. – Jay
Your going to tell us more of the Others!?! Lol just a wild guess!
Thanks Jay!
I just might do that…
Excellent, can’t wait for the next one.
What’s up with this book Jay? It’s so relentlessly dark that it’s a struggle to read, I’ve read all of the books in this series in around a day, I honestly don’t know if I can finish this one, it’s just filled with constant misery. Not finding it an enjoyable read, sorry.
Sorry you’re not enjoying this one, William. There is definitely more action in Invasion, which I’m finishing up now.
I enjoyed it in the end Jay, really struggled with the first half I would say with so much that is precious being threatened in every story ark but the end was one worked and left it in a good place.
I would say this, there are a few characters over due their comeuppance, hoping this comes soon. I don’t want to put any spoilers on the blog but I’m sure you know who I am thinking of…
Fantastic read as usual. Now back to reading about Erik Cain. Thank you for your work, I’m really enjoying the Blood on the Stars series as much as I liked Dune and Ringworld. So looking forward to Invasion.
Arthur, thanks so much. That’s heady praise. I’ve got some twists and turns coming up for Blood on the Stars, so, hopefully, you will like where I’m going with it. -Jay
I can only make use of the audio books, ans cannot wait for this one. This series has to rank near the top in terms of realism and “believeablility” The guy that reads the audio books takes you to the bridge of the ship. you can actually “feel” the tremors as the fighters launch. This series would make an excellent tv series if one could find the correct scriptwriters and actors.
Well done sir!
Alwyn, thanks so much for the comments. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the audiobooks. Audible does a good job with them. Sorry for the wait, but I know they work through them as quickly as they can. -Jay
What I really enjoyed about the series is that each book put a different adversary forward without dropping the existing ones. Kept me going. Lots of action! I could, however, do with a little less soul-searching on the part of the protagonists.
I look forward to the next book.
Jeff, glad you’ve enjoyed the books. I hope you continue to like them. -Jay
Dear Mr. Allan,
I really enjoyed Black Dawn. You have a depth of story like Anne McCaffrey, combined with the easy readability of Jack McDevitt. Your stories are a quick read but with just the amount of detail to make them fun. Thanks for your writing efforts thus far. Invasion should lead itself to any number of story arks with the amount of things taking place at the end of Black Dawn.
Jay, thanks so much. Writing long series is certainly what readers seem to want, but I really like it too, because it gives me time to really develop characters and storylines. I’m pretty excited with where the series is going in Invasion and beyond, and I hope you enjoy it as well. -Jay
Great book again! Was hoping Dauntles would be battle tested again, guess invasion will have our favorite ship and crew in the mix. Sounds like the great fleet will put them all to the test. Thks!
Scott, thanks! Yes, Invasion will have Dauntless again (and the next book, Nightfall, REALLY will). Take care. -Jay
Is it September yet?
I appreciate the enthusiasm, but not quite yet…
Only 1 week left!!!
Can’t wait for the next book!
Brilliant series, keep it going!!
Toni, my plan is to keep going for a good bit more. I’ve got a lot of stuff planned out right now. -Jay
Jay, thanks for the great books, I can’t wait to read invasion. Ypur narrative is fantastic, it is hard to put the book down and do something else.
Please make this series last…
Christopher, thanks so much for the post. I’m glad you’re enjoying the series. I do plan to keep it going for quite some time, at least as if now. I’ve got some ideas where to take it, and as long as that continues to work, I’ll keep it going. – Jay
This is an extremely great series Jay! Thanks for keeping it going. I can’t wait for September 12 to get Invasion. I’ve looked on Amazon and can’t seem to find it for pre-order. What’s up with that?
Dave, I’m glad you’re enjoying the series. I actually don’t usually put my books up for presale for a variety of reasons, but rest assured, it will be there on September 12. – Jay
